STEPHEN DAVIES @ All Saints Church
Time & Location
About the Event
Join us for a beautiful recital at All Saints Church from Stephen Davies. The recital will take place in two halves, the first consists of brilliant music by Bach and Mendelssohn, Vierne and Vaughan Williams. While the second includes music by Walton, Grieg and Bourgeois, and will leave you feeling in high spirits and uplifted.
The organist Stephen Davies, is a former chorister of St Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Music Scholar of Queen’s College, Oxford. Stephen was awarded a scholarship by the Austrian Institute to study with the great organist and composer Anton Heiller at the Academy of Music in Vienna. He is active both in the field of music education – particularly at St Olave’s School, Orpington, where he was Director of Music for seventeen years – and as an organ recitalist. As a recitalist Stephen has given concerts in major venues throughout Europe, New York and in New Zealand. He founded the Sine Nomine Singers in 1994 and conducted this chamber choir based in south London for almost twenty years, giving concerts in local venues as well as in Estonia, France and Germany.
The recital venue is All Saints' of Blackheath, a Grade 2 listed church designed by Benjamin Ferrey (1810-1880). The Earl of Dartmouth, who made the land available, laid the foundation stone on 26 October 1857 and on All Saints’ Day the following year (1 November 1858) the Bishop of London came to consecrate the church.
For 10 years the church lay within the diocese of London until 1867, when the boundaries of the ancient diocese of Rochester were redrawn. As south London expanded in the later Victorian period, it was felt that a new diocese was needed to meet the demands of the population. With the creation of the diocese of Southwark in 1905, from parts of the sees of Rochester, Canterbury, London and Winchester, All Saints was added to the new diocese.
